Biography

Ieva Lapkovska (1995) began her private studies at the age of five with Professor Irena Nelson (the mother of the world-famous conductor Andris Nelson). Later Ieva joined a music school in Riga and completed the flute class at the children’s music school, which she still considers one of the most important stage in her life:

I didn’t particularly like playing the flute at the time, but my parents were very insistent, especially my grandmother, we spent long hours together playing the gammas, but then I made friends with the instrument, now I call my flutes my daughters.

After that, she studied for many years at the Emīls Dārziņš Music High School, which is known as the best music high school in the Baltics. After graduating from music high school, she joined the Latvian Academy of Music in the department of Theory and History of Music, while continuing to play the flute in various projects. She completed her Master’s degree at the same Music Academy degree in Latvian Chamber Music of the 1980s.

Ieva has participated in a 3-year project - Poetry Concert, which is now available on Spotify. In this musical project she debuted with 3 compositions - Sabbath (2021) (for flute and violin), Arbeskas (2021) for flute solo, inspired by Berlin street drawings, and Mozart Nights (for flute, violin and guitar), which draws the listener into mystical soundscapes quoting Mozart’s flute sonatas.

Ieva Lapkovska has participated as flutist and composer in more than 30 concerts in Latvia - in manor houses, castles, museums and private concerts with the violinist Marianna Puriņa. Ieva Lapkovska has composed more than 20 trios for this project - for guitar, flute and violin, and then composed 5 more quartets for flute, violin, piano and guitar.

In the summer of 2024 Ieva Lapkovska went to the Dresden University of Music, where she took up an internship in Professor Michael Heinemann’s class, she is now a PhD candidate in Music. So far, Ieva has participated in the largest Bach conference to date, “Bach Heute”, where she was one of its organisers. Before that, she was a participant at a conference in Romania and in the Baltic States.

Currently, she is working on a multi-art project - “Clara Schumann in Letters”, where various works started by Clara Schumann are rediscovered, and combined with Ieva Lapkovska’s original works. The music will be accompanied by poetry and letters from Klara Schumann’s diary, which will offer a special insight into the private lives of Clara and Robert Schumann.

In addition to her creative and scholarly work, Ieva Lapkovska teaches flute and piano lessons for children and adults. In support of her students’ creative ideas and talents, Ieva always strives to involve her students in creative activities, form ensembles and inspire them to be themselves to believe in themselves and their own strengths.

I believe that everyone has musical talents, they just need to develop them in the right way and at the right speed. In my experience, I have realised that the first music teacher either introduces love of music or destroy it completely, so I try to be as gentle and epathic towards anyone who has chosen to follow this artistic path.
